That's helpful but we also put a gate up on a fence (in a half built compound (which also got raided)) and the lock was on the right. This might be a little hard to explain but is this possibly why: In our 1st base (the shed) we attached the wire while inside then the lock from the outside.

Now is when you need the wire and pliers. Place the wire in the fence inventory and pull out your pliers. Now you get the option to make it a gate. Hope this helps.
